Case Study - Web Based Reporting System
Industry:
Non-Profit
Client:
Confidential
Project:
Browser-Based Donor Management & Reporting
System |
 |
Problem:
Staff and volunteers in our client's
international offices use a wide variety of reports to view
sensitive membership information. Different reports are relevant
to different offices and individuals within the organization.
Certain reports are useful to all offices but the data in
the reports will vary based upon individual and location.
In summary, the client's reporting needs demand the highest-level
of layered security along with flexibility and consistency.
Creating, running and printing out these reports for all staff
and volunteers had become a tedious task that could be performed
only by a few IT people. The client was in need of a highly
secure, centralized repository for the reports where access
can be restricted on a user-by-user basis. The solution was
also required to be maintainable by internal staff.
Business Solution:
Wellington's first step was to analyze
the client's existing database infrastructure and perform
various tuning and optimization procedures. After that was
completed, WCC developed a browser-based application that
allows the client's worldwide staff to log into the system
based on their individual security authorizations. Users can
then enter data, generate and view "PledgeMaker" data, and
produce customized reports. The client's internal Systems
Administration group can add/delete users and manipulate the
individual security profiles of any user. Wellington provided
on site training to instruct users and promote this new application.
Architecture:
The system was developed in Active
Server Page and standard HTML using Oracle 8i as the back
end and Crystal Reports as the distribution/reporting software.
For security, the website utilizes a 128 bit encryption key
and the https protocol.
Benefit:
The client has a secure, stable, maintainable
online system that allows staff and volunteers in multiple
locations to view only relevant reports and information. In
fact, multiple users in various locations can access the system
simultaneously as it supports 10,000 users at once. The client
maintains this system internally although WCC is often contracted
to create additional reports and provide database services.
Currently, Wellington is designing an enterprise-wide Disaster
Recovery Plan.
